You Am I

How do you choose the best, greatest, most important of anything? Obviously it's a very subjective thing. But we wanted HowlSpace to start with a representation of the "top" artists from Australia and New Zealand. From here on in it's up to you and me to make sure that EVERY significant artist is recognized.

I haven't been so self-indulgent as to just tick off my own personal favourites. I've tried to create a balance between what time has shown to be the most significant artists from Australia and New Zealand (through actual success and status) and that personal opinion. I've ranked them according to their uniqueness, their originality, their impact, and constancy over their careers. I've tried to be fair, because the ultimate aim isn't who I think is great, but the best possible representation of those who are generally regarded as great. Admittedly I've had the luxury of the final say.

One thing you might be asking, is "where's Nick Cave"? I hope you aren't asking where's Olivia Newton-John"?!! The answer to both questions is that their careers have been global ones. Since Birthday Party, Nick has done almost no recording in Australia, and doesn't live in Australia. Similarly you'll find that we only take the Bee Gees and AC/DC careers as far the point where they become international entities. The purpose of HowlSpace is as a dedication to the music we live with and have lived with, the music that has grown from amongst us and we've grown up with.

At first that's what we're offering you, for what its worth, My Top 100. While you're absorbing this, we're working on the next phase of Howlspace. Next will come the profiles of all the Australian and New Zealand artists currently active, adding today's acknowledged best to the best of all time. And we'll keep delving into the past too, so that HowlSpace will quickly add up to the ultimate guide to all the music that is and has been part of this region of the world.

Finally you're asking. Who is Ed.Nimmervoll? I have been actively involved in writing about music since 1967- editor of Go-Set, founder of Juke, much more. You'll see from the profiles presented with my top 100 that I have been given a special insight into the music of our corner of the world which I am keen to share with you. As HowlSpace grows you'll share your insights with me, and everyone else who logs into HowlSpace.

Ed.Nimmervoll
