The
man who wrote and recorded APRA's recently-named second-best Australian
song of all time, 'Eagle Rock' hasn't released an album since 1989.
But he hasn't been idle. Since breaking up Mondo Rock and releasing
his solo album 'Dark Side Of The Man' album, Ross Wilson has kept
performing and writing, although, for whatever reason (probably
numerous) out of the mainstream spotlight. He's about to change
that (new music in the works) and in the process, looking over his
shoulder Ross remembered some of the little pieces left behind on
the way - tracks he's contributed to various special projects, the
Daddy Cool sessions which never resulted in an album, a live jam
which happened to get recorded, a track left over from the solo
album. They seemed worth collecting together. Adding three purpose-recorded
tracks, we end up with the album Ross is calling 'GoBongo GoWild'
and releasing on his own Wild Bongo label. It all hangs together
surprisingly well, from the cool swinging reworking of Jerry Lee
Lewis' 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' with Daddy Cool to the country-blues
weeper 'Xmas Card' written with Don Walker. The whole thing's a
happy romp through familiar Ross Wilson territory, albeit in the
forms of performances that are generally new to us. Whatever the
song or the style, or the musicians surrounding him, Ross Wilson's
voice and easy style is at the heart of it. What matters is that
most of this stuff happened along the way, and these songs were
never thought of as belonging together. It's the sound of Ross Wilson
enjoying his affair with music. Sometimes the tapes were rolling
