Tom Denison - Principal Consultant

 

 

 

Tom Denison has over 25 years involvement in the library and computing industries and has held a variety of project and technical management positions exploiting a wide range of technologies since commencing as a programmer in 1976. In 1996 he established his own consulting business - White Room Electronic Publishing Pty. Ltd - and more recently has been heavily involved in teaching and research at the Caulfield School of Information Technology at Monash University.

Tom specialises in the development of online services including the design and provision of online library services, the development of commercial publishing via the Internet and other electronic media, the interrelationships between libraries and their communities, and the design and delivery of related educational materials. He has worked on a number of library automation projects in Vietnam in both an advisory and project management capacity. He has also held positions as Systems Librarian at RMIT University Library (1978-1994), both Technical Manager and Head Of INFORMIT Electronic Publishing at RMIT (1990-1995), and has lectured at both Monash and RMIT Universities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Tom is currently working on the DART (Dataset Acquisition Accessibility & Annotation e-Research Technologies) project at Monash University, leading a small research team exploring social informatics and usability aspects of digital repositories. He has undertaken a range of work in the field of community informatics, working closely with the Centre for Community Networking Research at Monash University, including a major survey of the use of information and communications technologies by community sector organisations (Monash CICT Index) and is currently completing a PhD, undertaking research into the uses of information and communication technologies by community sector organisations, and the barriers to that use.

He has lectured part-time in both the Bachelors and Masters of Information Management programmes at Monash University since 1997, with subjects including Information Enterprise Management and Marketing, Information Organisation, Information Continuum, Developing Vitrual Communities on the Internet, Electronic Publishing, Public Networks, and Database Design.

Tom is currently President of VALA, the Victorian Association for Library Automation, and Chair of both the General and Programme Committees for the biennial conference, VALA2008. He has served on a number of other committees, including the National Library of Australia's Pandora Committee, which advised on the project to archive digital resources.

Current Activities

Director, White Room Electronic Publishing Pty. Ltd
White Room is a consultancy service specialising in online publishing and the commercial aspects of publishing. White Room is also involved in publishing material on both the Internet and CD-ROM, its latest venture being the multimedia music site Kick-Art, set up as a vehicle for webcasting, with clients including Telstra, the Victorian Association for Library Automation, and KGrind. White Room also undertakes graphic design projects.

Research Associate, Monash University, School of Information Management and Systems
Part-time lecturer and course developer specializing in electronic publishing and Internet applications, being particularly involved with the Masters of Information Management. Subjects taught since 1997 include Information Enterprise Management and Marketing, Developing Vitrual Communities on the Internet, Electronic Publishing, Public Networks, Database Design (For the Dept. of Business Information Systems). Electronic Publishing and Developing Virtual Communities were both developed for delivery exclusively via the Internet. (Also co-designed and presented IS747: Electronic Publishing for the RMIT Dept. of Information Services from 1994-1997).
